This tour will provide you with an in-depth insight into the rare and endangered wildlife, harbour history and the local maritime industry when you set off for a wildlife cruise to Portobello. Travel from here to tidal inlets to view the local birds then continue to a beach for a leisurely and refreshing stroll for an up-close and personal experience like no other.
Albatross Wildlife and Harbour Cruise, Beaches and Wetlands
Depart the cruise terminal area with your driver and be transported to your waiting vessel to begin your exciting and educational wildlife cruise. After a safety briefing your comfortable boat will motor off, you will find onboard bathroom facilities, binoculars and jackets (to borrow) and wildlife information sheets provided. Your tour group is kept to a maximum of approximately 12 guests only allowing for a very personal and intimate experience.
On your 2-hour albatross, wildlife and harbour cruise you will be provided with a fully commentated tour from your local, professional and knowledgeable guide and you can expect to see, Historic Quarantine Stations and wrecks of ships, fishing boats, workboats, dredges and other ships as you pass Port Chalmers and Carey's Bay.
Keep your eyes open for wading birds and look for penguins and shags as you cruise past roosting and feeding areas. View historic pilot's houses, searchlights, gun emplacements and old whaling stations plus Taiaroa Head with its shallow bays where you can see fur seals, nesting colonies of shags, albatross and much more. When conditions are right, you may even venture further out to sea where you have the chance to view oceanic seabirds and marine mammals such as dolphins, sea lions or whales.
Your destination is Portobello where you will then transfer by coach for a guided tour of the wetlands where you can gain insight into the quiet life of the wading birds. In the hidden inlets of the Otago Peninsula, your experienced guide knows where to go to get you close without disturbing the birds in their natural habitat. Then it will be time for your delicious lunch as it will be handed out to you to enjoy and refuel.

Please Note: Tours are rarely cancelled due to bad weather. The boat has a comfortable, heated cabin with large windows, so the cold, rain or wind is never a problem. We heat the cabin to between 18-25(C) degrees and there is a modern and heated toilet/bathroom onboard. The skipper will never take the vessel out if they are in doubt as to the safety of the passengers or vessel due to the weather conditions. If weather does not permit the beach stroll, you will visit the Royal Albatross Centre where free time will be given to enjoy the static displays.
